SUMMARY
What is human trafficking?
Human Trafficking is an act of recruiting, transporting, transfering, harbouring or receiving a person through a use of force, coercion or other means, for the purpose of exploiting them[1]. Every year men, women and children fall into the hands of traffickers, in their own countries and abroad. [2]
What is child trafficking?
Child Trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of children, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation.[3] Exploitation includes the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labour or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude or the removal of organs.[1]
What is the purpose of the US-Cameroon Child Trafficking Awareness Project?
One of the most important global social issues impacting youth and their future is child trafficking. International organizations like the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC) report that approximately 800,000 people are trafficked annually[2], and 2.4 million people living as modern day slaves[3]. A global enterprise worth in the region of US$ 32 billion, human trafficking affects nearly ever country in the world and has become a major concern. [4] However, through education, technology, cultural understanding, and leadership, the US-Cameroon Child Trafficking Awareness Project empowers youth in Atlanta, GA and Bamenda, Cameroon to become more aware of the problem, understand how culture and community impact child trafficking, and collaborate with one another to minimize this epidemic.
