What is YEEI?
Why Youth Employment?
Youth, defined as persons aged between 15 and 24, make up 17% of the world’s population, which is 1.2 billion youth. Youth make up 40% of the world’s unemployed, approximately 75 million people. Youth are three times more likely to be unemployed than people 25 years old or older. Most interesting is that 357.7 million youth are not in education courses, employed, or being trained, which contributes to the high number of underemployment amongst youth. There are many causes of youth unemployment: access, quality and relevance of education; deficiencies in the labor market; lack of comprehensive employment policies in countries and discouraged youth. Developing potential of youth is critical to the growth of the global economy and countries with young populations. This initiative is a part of a plan that proposes to employ 50 youth in four global cities in 2016. The plan also proposes holding regular Focal Point Global followup events on an annual basis in order to mobilize and institutionalize skill sets amongst youth in those cities.
Where will the project take place?
Since this initiative is the first of its kind for Focal Point Global, the initiative will officially commemorate in two US cities: Baltimore and Chicago; and two African cities: Johannesburg and Windhoek. It will be a 3 month long project spanning from May to August 2016. This initiative proposes to employ 50 youth in these four global cities. The plan also proposes holding regular Focal Point Global followup events on an annual basis in order to mobilize and institutionalize skill sets amongst youth in those cities.
